Sometime in the next 24 hours we will be switching European Tribune over to a new layout. This will involve a little downtime and no doubt some teething troubles. Do not adjust your set. - Colman

European Tribune - Reversing Global Warming while Meeting Human Needs
Let the relatively rich folks in the USA and the EU fend for themselves.  Start concentrating on the people who live on a dollar or two a day.

Yes. There's a great deal to be done to improve food production in the poorest parts of the planet -- by the people, for the people, and not by unsustainable mega-projects run by outside capital.

Well, it depends what you mean by "let them fend for themselves".
The rich regions pollute enough that they will wipe out the effects of all those nice local efforts (which, of course, are important and should be undertaken) if they don't change their ways, while not facing existential challenges (current trends will be annoying even in temperate climates, but Bangladesh would cease to exist). And so far it has seemed that they would not change their ways absent some significant means of coercion.

So, the help should go to the poor. But something must be done to curb the activities of the rich.

From my perspective in the USA, it seems that most of the developed world, the relatively rich, are thinking in terms of climate change and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, at least in lip service.  India and China (and Indonesia) are the big wild cards.  The Chinese Communist Party has an official position that takes the environment and climate change into consideration.  They recognize that following in the path of the USA or EU means we have to find another Earth or two to provide that kind of "prosperity."

Short term climate forces like black carbon and tropospheric ozone can make a big difference and provide ancillary benefits in terms of health and economics that makes the North/South who pays? argument moot.

The EU and USA should get on board with an aggressive zero emissions industrial and economic policy (but the USA doesn't do industrial policy) and begin to consider ecological design for climate change and other kinds of environmental remediation.  Allan Savory's work is an example of what could be possible.
